We live in a country where video games, TV, YouTube, Webkinz, and Facebook can rob our young people of quality time with family and friends. Time that used to be spent outside riding bikes, playing tag with the neighbor kids, or having 'game night' has been changed forever.
What has persevered through all these changes is scouting. For almost 100 years, Scouting has endeavored to instill in young people (and not so young people) a sense of duty to do more and to be more. From the First grade, young boys are involved in an organization whose purpose to to bring out the very best in the youth of our country.
Even today, Cub Scouting maintains those high ideals of duty, trustworthiness, patriotism, and respect for boys from 1st through 5th grades. In the ten years since Pack 125's charter, we have seen hundreds of boys go through the scouting program and move on to Boy Scouts to become active members not only of scouting, but in their church, their schools, and, most importantly, in their communities.
When people think of scouting, typically the first thing that comes to mind is hiking and camping. However, this is just a small part of the scouting experience. The projects and meetings are focused on the boys gaining confidence and knowledge in areas that aren't taught in school in an environment that is fun and steeped in tradition.
Ask any parent of any of our scouts, and you'll find that they have also been touched by the scouting experience. The bonding that takes place is hard to beat-- from Mom's and Dad's cheering on their boys as they receive awards to sitting by a campfire under a blanket of stars and talking about the days events-- and the memories created will last a lifetime.
